I am an associate professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction/Literacy Studies in the College of Education and Human Resources at West Virginia University (WVU). Currently, I work with students in WVU’s five- and four-year undergraduate teacher education programs as well as graduate students seeking initial teacher certification and advanced certification. I teach courses in elementary and middle grades mathematics education. I hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education Leadership from George Mason University. Prior to working in higher education, I worked as a classroom mathematics teacher in Loudoun County, Virginia, and also served as the district’s mathematics specialist. I have published articles in professional journals related to mathematics teacher quality, the use of technologies such as virtual manipulatives in mathematics teaching and learning, and the development and preparation of teachers of mathematics. My ongoing research interests include the development of mathematics teachers and mathematics teacher leaders, particularly at the elementary and middle grades levels.

Research Interests:

  • Elementary teachers’ understanding and interpretation and use of mathematics standards.
  • The development and work of elementary mathematics teacher leaders.
  • The development of prospective and practicing elementary teachers’ knowledge of mathematics content and teaching practices.
